Harris Athanasiades is a historian of education. His research mainly focuses on investigating two aspects of the Greek educational past: (a) the influence of teacher unions on the formation of state educational policy, and (b) the social controversy concerning the relation between school and nation. He has taught at the University of Crete (2002-2004) and University of Ioannina (2005-present). He was a Visiting Fellow to the University of Bristol and University of Cyprus conducting research during the years 2000-2001 and 2008-2009 respectively.
